Still conducted by their inspiring founder, Harry Christophers, The Sixteen are something of a national institution in the UK, with a huge fanbase around the world. Here, they traverse a selection of British choral works, from Tudor gems by Weelkes and Tomkins to Herbert Howells’ heart-rending funeral piece for John F. Kennedy, “Take Him, Earth for Cherishing”, and James MacMillan’s folk-infused “The Gallant Weaver”. There’s a smoothness to their sculpting of the music, an elegance to the long lines and an inner conviction that flows easily and wears its expertise lightly.
