Thanks to classics like “I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits” and “J.A.N.”, Detroit’s Moodymann is synonymous with some of the deepest house and techno ever set to tape. As a DJ, though, the artist otherwise known as Kenny Dixon Jr. ventures far beyond the four-to-the-floor guide rail. Across two gently mind-melting hours, Moodymann twists and turns his way through a staggering array of soul, funk, beat music, folk, synth-pop and more. The opening tracks—featuring laidback soul and boom-bap from Cody ChesnuTT, Dopehead and Jitwam—are a head-nodder’s delight; following a vibey stretch of Flying Lotus and Nightmares on Wax, he starts pulling out curveballs: Little Dragon’s wistful electro-pop, Andres’ Latin funk, even a vocoder-heavy jam from Caribou’s alias Les Sins. This being a Moodymann joint, Dixon himself supplies sly edits to many of his selections, guaranteeing that you’ll never hear these songs the same way anywhere else.
