Nico Muhly believes that great minimalist instrumental works should be beyond narrative; however, these selections for violin duo and piano certainly invite the listener to imagine cinematic landscapes and scenarios with their dark harmonies, complex rhythms and enigmatic melodies. Glass’ <i>In the Summer House</i> proceeds from the composer’s own elegant film score style, also pointing towards more sombre film music like Bernard Hermann’s scores for the movies of Alfred Hitchcock. Muhly’s more experimental <i>Four Suspensions</i> sounds shimmering and fresh here, receiving an inspired performance by the Chun sisters.
