French repertoire has always been a speciality for the great Boston Symphony—this classic 1955 complete recording of Ravel’s sumptuous ballet <i>Daphnis et Chloé</i> possesses a breathtaking emotional charge and intoxicating, seductive atmospheres. From the extraordinary colours that emanate from the orchestra, it’s clear that conductor Charles Munch has a natural affinity for this music. Producer John Pfeiffer’s sound gives this performance an almost cinematic feel, with the chorus emerging, soaring over the orchestra like celestial beings. Scene III’s “Sunrise” is one of the most magical on record, each woodwind flutter captured with absolute clarity as strings and brass bring the sun up on the lovers’ idyllic landscape.
