The New Jersey house legend opens his <i>DJ-Kicks</i> mix with an unusual intro. Over moody piano and the sounds of a bustling street scene, the East Orange native murmurs, “I just want to take you on a little trip to my city, to my life, to my journeys. With love, respect and admiration.” It’s a fitting introduction to a DJ whose work has always been deeply grounded in a sense of place. In the ’80s, Chandler came up as a resident DJ at Newark’s Club Zanzibar, the breeding ground for some of New Jersey’s most soulful strains of house and garage, and it’s that tradition that informs his selections here. Seventies soul from Rasa mingles with groundbreaking Bronx hip-hop from T La Rock; jazz fusion from French drummer André Ceccarelli gives way to new-school funk from UK group Soulful Session. One of the legacies of clubs like Zanzibar is that “dance music” doesn’t need to be limited to house or techno, and with this gorgeous, emotional set—which closes with Roy Ayers’ eternal “Liquid Love”—Chandler reminds us just how eye-opening a DJ’s guided journey can be.
