RADWIMPS was the perfect choice to soundtrack teenage fantasy film Your Name.. Director Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 animated feature runs on adolescent energy, something the quartet had captured in its music since forming in 2001. For RADWIMPS, it was a chance to work on its first-ever movie. The sonically curious outfit embraced the opportunity to make instrumental tracks bolstered by an orchestra. The resulting Your Name. (Deluxe Edition / Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) captures a winning collaboration in all its splendour. RADWIMPS’ familiar uptempo rockers and slow-burning guitar ballads add a youthful spark to Shinkai’s tale. Scoring for cinema, meanwhile, brings out new depth to the band’s musicality—one that would inform future releases. The rock energy RADWIMPS had developed over the previous 15 years pulsates through the songs on Your Name. (Deluxe Edition / Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Rollicking centrepiece “Zenzenzense (English Version)” channels the band’s earliest uptempo cuts to capture the nerves and thrills of being a teen, building to one of its most shout-ready hooks to date. When the plot called for more melancholy music, RADWIMPS turned to heart-tugging balladry on the twinkly “Sparkle (English Version)”. For the movie’s climax, the band crafted the soaring “Nandemonaiya (English Version)”, squeezing the sonic impact of an orchestra out of the group’s usual assortment of instruments. Even when separated from the Your Name. movie, these tracks deliver an emotional wallop and highlight the group’s ability to make good use of string sections. The band can be playful on sweet numbers “School Road” and “Visit to Hida” or dramatic on “Evoking Memories” and “Again to Goshintai”. Here, RADWIMPS displays a creative spark, relishing the chance to try something new.
