Debate raged over whether the British rap style known as grime could actually be considered hip-hop or if it owed so much to UK dance culture that never the twain would meet. So Dylan Mills elbowed free of UK garage’s shiny-shirted glitz, carved his own uncompromising lane—and gave grime a totemic masterwork—with his Mercury Prize-winning debut. Dizzee Rascal's debut <i>Boy in Da Corner</i> is hard, artful and streetwise enough to shut down this argument. Nineteen at the time of its release, Dizzee offered a 360-degree view of city life whose wit and musicality was nearly irresistible. "Fix Up Look Sharp" retooled one of rap's favourite sample sources, Billy Squier's "Big Beat", into a cut that brought to mind Rick Rubin's stark early productions. The Rascal also had plenty of time for a brand of tenderness within his clattery sound; "I Luv U" and "Sittin' Here" are somehow both noisy and soft at once. Beyond those skeletal self-made beats and brooding “come at me” bars (“Hold Ya Mouf”), <i>Boy in da Corner</i> is a triumph of precocious wisdom (“I Luv U”) and unexpected pop savvy.
