One of their fastest, grungiest and most energetic releases, Metallica’s <i>Death Magnetic</i> shows the band in excellent synergy. The deceptively pretty polyphony of “The Day That Never Comes” recalls their ‘80s guitar duets but quickly explodes into a frenzy of heavy drumming and soaring riffs. “All Nightmare Long” and “The End of the Line” are classic thrash to their core; “Suicide & Redemption” puts guitarist Kirk Hammett’s magic on full display. Metallica try a few new tricks here but maintain the fury of their best records.
