Born in London’s East End in 1882, Leopold Stokowski made this <i>Scheherazade</i> recording in 1964, aged 82, and 50 years or so after he had first conducted the London Symphony Orchestra. Always a fan of new recording processes, he liked the full-on immediacy of Decca’s “Phase 4 Stereo” technology. And the richness and brilliance of the orchestral sound here had always been a Stokowski trademark. This has to be one of the most exciting recordings of <i>Scheherazade</i> ever made, with Stokowski bringing out all the Eastern colour and drama of Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece of musical storytelling. From start to finish, and especially in the “The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship” and “The Young Prince and the Young Princess”, the focused richness of the string sound amazes. And in Rimsky-Korsakov’s <i>Capriccio espagnol</i> and Borodin’s <i>Polovtsian Dances</i>, too, every musical phrase comes up sounding as fresh and vivid as if you’d never heard it before.
