Big-band Vivaldi is something of a curiosity these days. This sprightly recording dates from 1981 and returns in Spatial Audio in 2021, with world-leading violinist Gidon Kremer rightfully placed centre stage in the new sound picture. One of the joys of this recording is the delightful harpsichord- and organ-playing of Leslie Pearson, which nicely complements Claudio Abbado’s vivid characterisation and high drama. The moments of repose are quite ravishing and the sleepy slow movement of <i>L’autunno</i>, in particular, is heavenly. Kremer is in top form, his bow skipping over strings with great style and poetry, and he subscribes to the conductor’s colourful vision with palpable enthusiasm.
