Nigerian MC Runtown’s <i>Ghetto University</i> is a master class in musical synthesis, processing myriad globe-trotting influences—hip-hop, dancehall, West African funk—into a singular sound. The DJ Khaled-assisted “Money Bag” opens with a dramatic, G-funked fanfare that swiftly simmers into an accelerated Afrobeat cadence, while the rave synths of “Kilofoshi” give way to a light bhangra groove, sitar accents and cheeky Drake quotes. Tying it all together is Runtown’s sweet, vivacious voice, which is Auto-Tuned less for corrective purposes than for a blissfully dubbed-out, psychedelic effect.
