Over the course of two decades, Cass McCombs has taken great pains to elude easy narratives and easy analysis—the California-born singer-songwriter doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. On <i>Heartmind</i>, his 10th studio LP, McCombs remains true to form, expertly slipping between double-knotted rock (“Music Is Blue”), rootsy epics (“Unproud Warrior”, featuring vocals from Wynonna Judd), Latin psych (“Krakatau”), gentle free jazz (the haunting closer) and iridescent power-pop (“Karaoke”, one of his best tunes to date). All of it sounds like him and him alone.
