Altern-8 main man Mark Archer continues his compelling history of ’90s dance floors with a set of classic cuts from the likes of Hackney Hardcore, DJ Hype and Goldie & Rufige Kru—all of which were integral to one of the UK dance’s most inventive movements. “As the rave scene moved on stylewise at a fast pace during 1991 and into 1992, one of the dominating sounds was breakbeat hardcore—known back then as just hardcore,” he tells Apple Music. “This mix is just a few of my favourites from those two years, highlighting the influences on the sound from reggae, Italian piano and the Northern bleep techno sound, as well as Belgian techno—all added to sped-up hip-hop breaks to create something unique to the UK.”
