A conservatory-trained musician from Jiangsu province, house producer Zhu Yihan picked up the drums as a child, did a cappella covers as a teen, and at the age of 17 became the first DJ from mainland China to perform at Belgium’s renowned Tomorrowland festival. His 2022 debut album <i>Belated Suffocation</i> captures the scope of his musical evolution, but it was an eight-hour marathon session at Burning Man 2023 that inspired him to up his game. “From now on, my hope is for every DJ set I do to really hold up—the right music, the right dance floor, and the right location,” he tells Apple Music. “Music and atmosphere, rather than a performance, are the most important elements of a set.” For this DJ mix, Zhu has the perfect setting in mind: “I wanted to create and capture the atmosphere of a home party.” This focus on music as a mood-maker keeps his setlist ever-changing. “I’ll add tracks that either complement or clash with the setting,” he says.“ And that’s why I haven’t used all that many visuals—getting them to fit with different music every time is too much of a chore.”
