Solo Neil is always a treat, whether it’s in-studio documents like <i>Hitchhiker</i> or live recordings dug out of the archives over the years (<i>Live at Massey Hall 1971</i> is a nice place to start). Billed as a soundtrack to partner Daryl Hannah’s documentary of his 2023 tour, <i>Coastal</i> is notable for pulling out material Young doesn’t usually pull out, including a solo “Vampire Blues”, “I Am a Child” and three songs from 1995’s Pearl Jam team-up <i>Mirror Ball</i>, an album even die-hards and contrarians probably put in the second tier. If there’s an organising principle, it’s nature: what it gives us, what we take from it, what we can no longer fix whether we want to or not. Sobering thoughts, all rendered with the frank tenderness that makes him Neil Young. Sample banter: “What’s your favourite planet?”
