Mother Mother have become one of Canada’s most reliable indie rock exports since they emerged in 2005 with their debut album <i>Mother</i>. On 2025’s <i>Nostalgia</i>, they return to their roots, exploring ageing, social norms, evolution and the good old days. Opener “Love to Death” is a crunching folk-rock number built around sturdy drums and spindly guitar melodies, highlighting a nearly psychic connection between the group’s trio of vocalists. The stripped-back instrumentation doesn’t forge simplicity, but rather allows for more room for the group’s innovative, sterling harmonic exercises to lead the show. “Namaste” is a peaceful acoustic-guitar-led jam built for late nights around the campfire and early mornings watching the sun rise. It’s an examination of peace in the mode of George Harrison, a study of how tranquillity comes so easy for some but is impossible to achieve for others. “You’ve got to break yourself away/Which I can’t do/Instead I suffer through,” the band sings. It’s an important reminder that no matter how long you’ve been at it, the hard work continues.
