“By 1997, drum ’n’ bass had exploded worldwide and many of the DJs were travelling to all different parts of the globe to play the music. I remember going to Japan to DJ for the first time, touring different cities, including Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya,” Peshay tells Apple Music as his mix series documents the year that D’n’B conquered the world. “At the end of each of the gigs, there were queues at the decks of people looking for me to sign records and T-shirts. It was insane. The energy for the music was incredible, it made me realise that drum ’n’ bass was getting huge everywhere and people were really loving it.” In the earlier years, Peshay was playing a lot of tracks from Metalheadz and Good Looking Records, but by that time his crate was filling up with V Recordings, the label started by Bryan Gee and Jumpin’ Jack Frost in 1993. “By 1997, my sets were featuring a lot of tracks from V. I especially liked V because they had developed a unique creative sound which I loved, including the infamous ‘Bristol sound’ developed by the likes of Roni Size, Krust and DJ Die.” Peshay recalls it was a golden era for clubbing, with D’n’B coming to the fore at so many nights in London. “Club nights like Metalheadz Sunday Sessions at The Blue Note and Speed at the Milk Bar on a Thursday night were going strong in 1997. I remember regularly playing at Movement at Bar Rumba, Shaftesbury Avenue, which was put on by Bryan Gee. That was a great regular night that featured all the DJs from the drum ’n’ bass scene and ran for a good few years. There were lots of clubs in London that were putting drum ’n’ bass foremost on the bill, including The End, Turnmills and Bagley’s. The new scene was strong and 1997 laid down permanent foundations for the music. By this time, it seemed to be more than a new developmental genre, drum ’n’ bass was here to stay and was now a global scene.” Rewind to 1997 with Peshay’s key tracks from the pivotal year in his mix.
