Alan Doyle may be the barstool bard of Newfoundland, but on <i>Already Dancing</i>, he draws inspiration from a very different kind of island. Written during a getaway to the Dominican Republic, “Take It Easy with Me” finds the veteran Great Big Sea lead vocalist whistling over a casual, countrified reggae groove and inviting his partner to “slow dance where we don’t need pants”, yielding a ready-made anthem for vacationing snowbirds enjoying their first margarita at sunset. That song anchors an eclectic six-track EP that showcases the breadth of Doyle’s songcraft, spanning ragged roots rockers (“Follow You Around”), tender ballads (“We’re Still Here”, the title track) and the sort of jaunty fiddle-powered jigs that make a pub-hopping night on the town sound like an Olympian feat (“The Crawl”).
