Producer Danny L Harle is one of the more quietly influential producers in modern pop, a former affiliate of vanguard “hyperpop” consortium PC Music (RIP) who has since moved on to Grammy-nominated work with Caroline Polachek and unambiguously mainstream artists like Dua Lipa and Olly Alexander. (He didn’t change his sound; the sound changed around him.) <i>Cerulean</i> illustrates the icky, weird side of pop pleasure, from the synth tummyaches of “Laa” and “Island (da da da)” to the AI-girlfriend alienation of “Starlight” (featuring PinkPantheress) and “Azimuth” (featuring Caroline Polachek), mixing the catchy hyperactivity of rave with the playful side of experimental electronic music—an album that makes <i>BRAT</i> sound like classic rock.
