Laufey’s incomparably cosy jazz-pop makes the rest of the year feel like Christmas anyway, so it was only a matter of time before she threw her hat into the holiday album ring. Everything here is both totally delightful and exactly where you’d expect it: the playful curlicues of plucked strings and slinky bassoon on “Santa Baby”; the brisk, muted trumpet on “Winter Wonderland”; the children’s choir on the lesser-known “The Christmas Waltz”; and so on. (Her own “Christmas Magic” slots in so comfortably you’d think you heard it before.) There’s something to be said for taking a novel approach to tradition—but there’s also something comforting about letting tradition be.
