The experimental art-rock group of Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo and David Kendrick have been steadily mastering the art of the cover. They’ve released full-length tribute albums to Nina Simone (2013’s <i>Nina</i>) and to Angelo Badalamenti’s <i>Twin Peaks</i> soundtrack (2016’s <i>Plays the Music of Twin Peaks</i>), and since 2020, they’ve put their haunted spin on a wide-ranging selection of songs via their Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu subscription service. On <i>Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1</i>, the band compiles 12 of those covers, sharing their alternately dreamy and doomed takes on songs from Roy Orbison, GloRilla and Throbbing Gristle; scuzzing up The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” with harsh noise; and injecting Robyn’s euphoric “Dancing on My Own” with a much-needed dose of mortal terror.
