Ever since “I Love It”, their euphoric 2012 Charli xcx collaboration that quickly became a millennial anthem, Icona Pop have remained committed to potent beats and catchy choruses. Ritual, their fourth album, brings the Swedish dance-pop duo back to the club, where they know the dance floor and its healing properties can give them respite in the wake of heartache. Opening track “Hurt” sets the tone for what follows: “Although you hurt me, there’s still a heart in my chest.” Each song is a snapshot from a different phase of a relationship; the good, bad and horny memories all have a place in these 10 songs. The glitchy “Butterfly Feelings” confesses private desires with a full chest (“I want you from the waist down/Let’s go to my place now)”; “Mad Love” is tailor-made for teen rom-com montages (“I’ve not been looking for trouble/But for love, yeah, I’m a sucker”); and “Yellow Top” bottles up the flirtations that simmer on the beaches of Ibiza or Miami. But Ritual balances out every smitten moment with a bittersweet reflection on how fleeting and hurtful love can be, from the petty kiss-offs of “Didn’t Mean It Like That” and “Cooler” to closer “Foreverness”, which proves that parting really is such sweet sorrow, especially when warm synths are involved (“For one last time/I wanna dance like we’re not that brokenhearted”). The escapism of Ritual is effective: A break-up can be brutal, but you can always lose yourself in the music for a bit until you’ve danced your way through it.
