This mostly instrumental collection combines the best bits of Beck’s experimental side with his hard rock roots. It starts with an about-face: the soft, Wild West ambience of "Corpus Christi Carol" soon clears the way for "Hammerhead", a blues shredder with a guitar riff big enough for a battle scene out of <i>Mad Max</i>. Across the album, Beck's guitar soars above strings and synthesisers, only meeting its match in Joss Stone’s howling vocals on their cover of "I Put a Spell on You".
