Furthering the momentum of his 2010 international debut, West African heavyweight Ebo Taylor balances indestructible Afrofunk horn riffs with heartfelt highlife guitar on <i>Appia Kwa Bridge</i>. Featuring contributions from Nigerian drum god Tony Allen, the album channels a ’70s sound thanks to analogue organs and layered, polyrhythmic percussion. Taylor draws from his Ghanaian roots while showing his emotions—the ferocious “Ayesama” is adapted from a Fante war cry, while “Barrima” is a brittle, solo guitar tribute to the passing of his first wife.
