By stripping Curren$y’s verses from their collaborative album <i>Covert Coup</i>, The Alchemist is free to take centre stage with his imaginative production work instead. The Californian beatmaker’s trademark sounds—hard-hitting drums, chirpy vocal loops and scratchy samples—are given space to shine on the vintage East Coast-style triumph of “Full Metal”, while skewered guitars and piano tinkles punctuate “Double 07”. The bleak electronics underpinning “Scottie Pippens”, meanwhile, sound like they’ve been stolen from an ‘80s slasher movie.
