It isn’t that he’s the toughest. though he’s plenty tough; it’s that he understands toughness isn’t everything, and in fact, isn’t much. Maybe that’s why he still sounds vital chasing pum-pum in his fifties (<b>“X Rated”,</b>) or at least why the X-rated stuff feels at home alongside anguished political tracks like <b>“Power”</b>: In Banton’s music, there’s always been more to life than partying. Dancehall enthusiasts will smile at nods to the “Diseases” riddim (<b>“We Nuh Play”</b>) and Coxsone Dodd’s “Real Rock” (<b>“Butterflies”</b>), while tracks like <b>“House Call”</b> and <b>“Like You”</b> incorporate the atmospherics of modern hip-hop without stooping to imitate it. It’s funny to think about a sound so youthful and aggressively sexed-up becoming “traditional” music, but it has—and Banton’s the elder statesman.
