“Got my heart broken/Broke a couple too,” Ruth B. announces at the top of her third album, and that line serves as a warning to both potential suitors and long-time fans alike: Things are about to get messy. <i>Peace to Make</i> sees the Edmonton-born singer continuing to refine the dreamy fusion of folk, R&B and indie pop that made her a viral breakout star in the late-2010s, but the songwriting here drives a spike into a heretofore untapped reservoir of raw emotion and fearless candour. This is a post-breakup album through and through, as Ruth pines for the good times through the laidback Lilith Fair vibes of <b>“Best Days”</b>, navigates a crisis of confidence on the post-<i>Folklore</i> lullaby <b>“Breathe”</b> and ponders the what-could’ve-been of it all in devastating detail on the plaintive piano ballad <b>“Shoulda Been Us”</b>. (“Do you ever wonder about the kids we’ll never have, the house we’ll never own, the life we’ll never know?”) But she finds her closure on the empowerment anthem <b>“Pick Me”</b>, whose rousing, cathedral-sized chorus reminds us that you can’t find a new love without loving yourself first.
