Well before J Dilla became a household name in hip-hop, the Detroit native played an integral role in Busta Rhymes’ solo career. First as part of production collective The Ummah, and subsequently as Jay Dee and, finally, Dilla, he proved a reliable presence across the albums that made the former Leaders of the New School MC into a veritable rap superstar. A year or so after the innovative beatmaker’s tragic passing in 2006, the Flipmode Squad don honoured him fittingly with the <i>Dillagence</i> mixtape, a project soundtracked entirely by his departed friend. Yet for the past two decades, unbeknownst to many of their respective and collective fans, he has also been the keeper of some 300 unreleased Dilla productions, a handful of which serve as the foundation for this unexpected yet more than welcome joint release. Bookended by blessings from Ma Dukes herself, <i>DILLAGENCE II</i> stands to rank among the most meaningful labours of love in hip-hop history. When Busta formally enters on <b>“How the Boss Will Deliver”</b>, he does so with the brash charm and lyrical dexterity that solidified him in the genre. As that promising cut eases seamlessly into the more boisterous pairing of <b>“Entry”</b> and <b>“SPAZZZ”</b>, it’s hard to deny what these beats bring out of the veteran rapper. His contemporary concerns find their way into songs like <b>“Drugs”</b>, a cautionary swirl of metaphors only he would be capable of constructing. Rather than fill each track with guest after guest, Busta instead shares the space more sparingly, making deliberate and thoughtful choices in line with Dilla’s precious legacy, including Detroiters like Big Sean and the inimitable Lil Wayne. A handful of rappers who benefitted from the producer’s ear during his lifetime make auspicious appearances, including Common and Talib Kweli on <b>“What We Got in Common”</b> and <b>“Love & War”</b>, respectively. The spirit of The Soulquarians surges with D’Angelo’s posthumous presence on <b>“This Woman”</b>, his exquisite voice both contrast and complement to Busta’s gruff yet romantic overtures. <b>Our Favourite Track:</b> With a mighty nimble verse from T3, <b>“Lay Down”</b> effectively commemorates Dilla’s tenure as an early Slum Village member.
