John Lennon is a cultural icon who wrote songs that will be sung for generations. His post-Beatles career was one of artistic wandering. 1970’s <i>Plastic Ono Band</i> was an intense self-analysis. <i>Imagine</i> was his utopian vision (“Imagine”) coupled with his vicious social commentary (“Gimme Some Truth”). <i>Some Time In New York City</i> is his most overtly political. <i>Rock ‘n’ Roll</i> is his childhood dream of playing his favorites come to life. The great moments (“Working Class Hero,” “God,” “Instant Karma!,” “Imagine”) are genius. The “average” moments still feature one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest voices and make him seem so endearingly human. The “home demos” showcase his brilliant humor. It’s an understatement to say the man changed the world.
