In the mid-'80s, Sam Phillips expanded her successful career beyond the Christian music world into the mainstream, nearly a full decade before such pop-religious crossovers would become fashionable. But a severe falling out with her religious label soon led to Phillips embracing secular pop full-time, as well as making frequent studio collaborator T-Bone Burnett her husband. While her music evolved through a series of more pop-centric incarnations in the '90s, a label switch returned her to less embroidered, more acoustic-centered stylings on 2001's haunting <i>Fan Dance</i> and this 2004 follow-up. While the stark sonic approach is similar to its predecessor, the songs are sunnier and less introspective in disposition, from the sensual "Red Silk 5" and "Love Changes Everything" to the Euro-cool charms of "I Dreamed I Stopped Dreaming" and the waltzing spirituality of "Hole in My Pocket."
