Richard D James calls this his most “pop” record as Aphex Twin. Certainly, the skittering rhythms and playful structures make room for warm melodies to slide in. While <i>Syro</i> may not be one of James’s scorched-earth re-inventions of sound though, it still reformats techno, acid house and jungle to a thrillingly singular vision exemplified by the dizzying electronic pyschedelia of “XMAS_EVET10 [120] [thanaton3 mix]”. Pop, but not as anyone else knows it.
